In response to the reply by .DC on my previous post "Collect Books," I observe the difficulties of Christian publishers and the reading habit in Hong Kong:
  1. too few emerging writers come to the scene of publishing market, most "new" books are authored by well respected old writers (in terms of experience and reputation for three decades in HK).
  2. Most published works are collected short 'light' essays, not fruitful for the mind but for bedtime reading.
  3. Some are translated works for the popular interest of the major readers. It does no help to widen the narrow mind in the Church.
  4. Very few high quality foreign language titles are translated into Chinese, but the appreciating readers may have already brought/read them in the original language.
  5. In short, Christian publishers dare not "investing" on younger generation of writers.
I think the reading pattern has undergone dramatic change these years. The blogging community has contributed to a new style of reading experience, which may somehow replace the traditional publishing industry. In Barth's word, thinking is more important than collecting. Is it not the role that we bloggers doing now?

I have this idea for over a year.

Every time I visit the christian bookstore. I enjoy the new books section as well as the music section. On books, you can glance through them yourself and determine whether you want to bring them home. With CDs, some book stores have samples to let you listen before you purchase.

Those are good, but not enough.

Why can't we start a forum to post reviews and comments about the local christian books and music?
Take an example from amazon.com.

It will serve as an independent reviews of the market. However, such reviews can also alter the fate of the books and CDs. Given the christian books and market are not large already.

However, wouldn't it be better if we can improve the quality publication and music art.

We have book buying market, but not book reading or thinking market. Doing book review is great, but it is the contribution of the reader, not the author or the publisher. The publisher concerns much more the the publishing market as a business, this is a life or death issue in HK situation. The publisher provides goods for the Christian reader who considers themselves as consumer. Is there a consumer who will pay effort to move the industry forward besides enjoying a pleasureful reading experience?

Paul

Actually, a simple forum can't achieve this well.

But, if we really build an on-line system to manage the info and reviews of books by ourselves, it needs a huge amount of resources that we, general consumers, can't afford. (time and money)

That's why there are few platforms for reading market only, but a lot for publishing.

Agree with Little Ho and Paul 少.

Actually, a closer platform like anobii.com may be a good start.

here is my bookshelf: http://www.anobii.com/people/fatdodo/

However, like Paul 少 said, I don't have the time to write any feedbacks or reviews of any books.
